No Class Today, January 28

Hello All,

The college opens at 10am today, which means that we will NOT be meeting. You should proceed directly to your 10:00 class (if you have one) when you arrive today. Assuming there's no more snow, we will meet at the usual time tomorrow. Check here and on the Pierce College website for updates.

This Week's Work (Saturday Students Only)

Here's what you should be working on this week:

English 98

Continue working on grammar chapters and quizzes.

English 99

Continue working on grammar chapters and quizzes. Continue reading The Beggar King (at least one chapter per week). Complete your Unit One paragraph (if you haven't already) and prepare for Unit Two by reading the essay "Enough is Enough" (starting on page 545 of The Writer's World).

English 101

Select one of the mini-observations you did last week to turn into a full-length paper. Begin a rough draft. Use the "Guide to Writing Observation papers" in your book for ideas. You'll be able to continue working on this during class next week.

English 103

Continue locating sources for your final Works Cited list (which should be completed by the end of the day next Saturday).

Email me with any questions!

Today's Class

Good morning all,

I hope this message reaches at least some of you before you leave home this morning. I became quite ill last night and am still not quite functional, so I'm going to make a last-minute change and have today be our holiday off. We will not be having class today. To make sure we don't fall behind, I WILL be holding class on Presidents' Day weekend.

If you get this message and you do come in today, please give any assignments that are due to Barbara so that I can retrieve them on Tuesday. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at meredith.al.lynch@gmail.com I'm not expecting to be out of bed until this afternoon, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can. If you do get this message and don't go to school, you may e-mail your work (JUST THIS ONCE) as a Word attachment. I believe that only English 99 and 101 have papers due today.

Later today (or maybe tomorrow) I'll also update this blog with your assignments for the coming week.

Thanks for your understanding. I'll see you next week.

Presidents Day Weekend (Saturday Students)

Several of you had asked about whether or not we'd be having class on Saturday, February 16th. I asked about this and was told that it was my choice. I was initially leaning toward having class to make sure we didn't fall behind, but then I heard about a workshop being held that day that I'd like to attend. So, for purely selfish reasons, I've decided that we WON'T meet that day. I'm going to assume that everyone's okay with this. We WILL be meeting tomorrow (January 19th). I could have chosen to take tomorrow off instead of February 16th, but I found out about that too late to let everyone know. Also, I think the February date works better as a kind of mid-quarter "mental health day" for all of us.

See you tomorrow!

Winter Weather

I forgot to put a note in the winter quarter syllabus about what to do in cases of inclement weather (snow and ice). To determine whether or not the college is open, you can log on to the Pierce College home page (www.pierce.ctc.edu). If the college is closed, or if the college is opening late, there will usually be a message posted by about 6am. If the college is open but there is snow or ice in your area, please use your own judgement. Saturday students: if driving conditions are unsafe in your area, PLEASE come to class as soon as you feel it is safe to do so.

Saturday Potluck

Saturday students: respond to this message to sign up for next Saturday's potluck. I believe that Bob has already volunteered to bring a main dish (chili?). So we still need someone to bring a couple of side dishes and some beverages. Thanks!
